3 of the Most Common Orthopedic Injuries

Each day, your body makes a variety of movements. As bone, muscles, ligaments, and tendons become worn and damaged, you may develop certain ailments that require orthopedic care.

At Mid Atlantic Orthopedic Associates, we specialize in the recovery process. Here are three of the most common injuries that occur from sporting accidents, aging, or everyday activities.

Ankle Sprains

Your ankle connects your leg and foot. When you twist or bend your ankle in the wrong way, a sprain may happen. This can occur as a result of playing sports, wearing inappropriate footwear, or lack of flexibility. Although a mild injury will get better with rest, a more serious problem may require orthopedic care. You may need to wear a brace or cast and undergo physical therapy to help regain your strength.

In severe cases, you may need some type of surgical treatment. If a doctor suspects that you have loose pieces of cartilage or bone, arthroscopy may be performed. If a ligament is torn, a surgeon may be able to repair the damage. Rehabilitation will be necessary to help you return to your regular range of motion.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis commonly causes pain in a person’s foot or heel. This injury occurs when the tissue that runs from heel to toe becomes inflamed. Non-surgical treatments include rest, exercise, and taking anti-inflammatories. When pain persists, orthopedic surgery may be necessary. If you have difficulty flexing your foot, you may need a gastrocnemius. With this procedure, the calf muscle is lengthened to heighten your range of motion.

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

Carpel tunnel is commonly experienced by people who apply pressure to their median wrist nerves. It causes a numb or tingling sensation that runs down the arm and affects the hand. Over time, it can become increasingly painful. If diagnosed early, the condition may be effectively treated by wearing a brace or splint, changing everyday activities, and performing a few exercises that allow your hand’s median nerve to move more freely.

Unfortunately, in many cases, orthopedic treatment is necessary. A surgeon will perform a “carpal tunnel release.” During this procedure, the doctor cuts a small incision into the hand’s palm and increases the tunnel’s size so that pressure is alleviated. Throughout recovery, a patient will likely need to wear a brace.
