Having orthopedic surgery? Not to worry, orthopedic surgery is an incredibly safe procedure done by well-trained specialists. However, it can still be intimidating, especially if you’re unprepared for the operation. To help the
surgery go more smoothly and to make life easier during your recovery, here are some tips to remember in the preceding weeks.
For Your Surgery
The surgeon is going to do most of the work, but there is still a part for you to play. For your own health, you should spend your time before the surgery exercising and eating a healthy diet. The food you eat is critical, as you’re going to need as much strength as possible for your body to recover in the coming months, so fill up on protein, iron, and vitamin C. Also, stop smoking. You should quit smoking anyway, but now more than ever as smoking affects blood flow patterns making healing more difficult.
Lastly, organize all of your medical information, along with your insurance card and any legal documents you might need. They’re probably going to ask for those items at the hospital. If you’re still feeling jittery, it may help to ask somebody who’s had a similar surgery or to look up testimonies on the internet. You should ask your doctor any questions you may have as well to calm your nerves.
For Your Recovery
The time after your surgery is equally important to prepare for as the surgery itself. Suffice it to say, you won’t be doing jumping jacks for a little while afterward, so try to find somebody who is able to drive you home from the hospital when the surgery is done. Also, find out what recovery equipment you’ll need, such as crutches or a wheelchair, and procure whatever you need ahead of time.
If you’re going to be staying with a friend/family member or assisted living facility, remember to arrange your living situation beforehand as well. However, if you’re going to be living on your own, it’s a good idea to fill your freezer with some frozen dinners so you won’t have to concern yourself with what to eat. Finally, there’s a good chance you’re going to need physiotherapy for some time after your surgery, so find out where the nearest physiotherapy facility is.
Surgeries are scary for a lot of people, but if your doctor recommends it for you, that means it’s much more dangerous to not have the surgery than the surgery would be. Just make sure you listen closely to your doctor’s advice and make preparations for your recovery, and you should be completely fine.
