Osteoporosis Treatment

Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones in which the bones become weak and insufficient to withstand normal impacts. In normal bone, a simple fall from standing height does not cause a wrist fracture, hip fracture, spine fracture, or other extremity fracture.

In bones with osteoporosis, fractures are common and can occur from a minor fall, a bump into furniture, or even a sneeze. Osteoporosis can lead to loss of height due to compression fractures of the spine, chronic pain, and permanent disability.

Osteoporosis is common and is estimated to affect approximately 54 million Americans. Studies suggest that 50% of women and 25% of men over age 50 will break a bone as a result of osteoporosis. In elderly patients, approximately 25% will die within one year following a hip fracture.

What Can We Do?

Taking Calcium and Vitamin D is not enough! There are a variety of other agents that both prevent bone loss and build new bone. Our goal is to restore your bone density and maintain it to minimize your risk of breaking a bone.

If you are over 50 and have had a broken bone, you should be evaluated. Osteoporosis develops slowly so you may not be aware that your bones are weak. If your spine seems more crooked this may also be a sign of osteoporosis.

You will be sent for some simple tests including a bone density scan and basic lab work to assess if any treatment is recommended. We are also able to calculate your future risk of fracture based on the information gathered.
